Information architecture

Information architecture is the overall structuring of content on a website or other information channel, enabling people to find what they want, through browsing or searching.

The discipline of information architecture has been taken to its recent and rapid maturity by librarians, who have evolved classification, organisation and labelling into a best practice for the web.

Information architects create scheme, which is the grouping of content, and hierarchies, the relationships within content. IAs have an attention to detail, and the patience to question the clarity and ambiguity of words. To hold a large site together and create a sitemap in the user's mind, they develop navigation systems with different levels of wayfinding.

IAs communicate the content and structure of the site using scenarios, site maps or blueprints, and simple page mockups.
